One of South Australia’s most iconic outback destinations is entering a new era, with Rawnsley Park Station in the Flinders Ranges is undergoing a major building boom and generational leadership transition that might just redefine the future of regional tourism in the state.

The long-running family operation, which also extends to Barossa Shiraz Estate, is now being guided into its third generation, with Neville Smith stepping into the role of CEO as the business expands its accommodation, touring and immersive visitor experiences.

“The Smith family first came to the Hawker District in 1884 and lived on a farm a few km south of Hawker. The first three generations were focused entirely on farming,” shared Neville. “My grandparents, Clem and Alison Smith, initially saw an opportunity to enter tourism with sheep shearing displays and one holiday cabin in 1968.

“Mum and Dad came to Rawnsley Park in 1984 and have gradually developed the tourism facilities over the last 40 years. Over the years, it has evolved from predominantly a caravan park and holiday unit accommodation provider to a full-service experiential tourism destination that serves customers of all types and budgets.”

So what began as a working pastoral property has slowly transformed over four decades from caravan park accommodation into a multi-layered tourism experience. Now, the next phase is focused on scaling that vision even further.

A key part of the current building boom is the development of the new Oasis Eco-Villas, positioned on what the family describes as one of the most spectacular vantage points on the station. Overlooking Rawnsley Bluff and Wilpena Pound, the new villas will introduce a premium level of luxury accommodation to the Flinders Ranges, complete with private heated plunge pools.

The expansion is all part of a broader strategy to meet growing demand for high-end, experience-led travel in regional South Australia.

“We believe that the Flinders Ranges landscape is one of the most attractive and unique landscapes in the world,” said Neville. “The changing colours on the ranges throughout the day and diversity of local wildlife are something that people will travel from all over the world to experience, all within an accessible drive from Adelaide.

“We want visitors to experience this landscape from as many different angles as possible. Whether it is Bushwalking, 4WD driving, Scenic Flights, or helicopter experiences, all of these options provide something different for visitors in the region. Our goal is to create a destination where no two visits are the same.”

Alongside accommodation growth, Rawnsley Park is also rolling out new guided touring experiences, including the Nilpena Ediacara Day Tour, which connects guests with one of the most significant fossil sites on Earth before continuing through Brachina Gorge and the Prairie Hotel.

This is all part of a wider ambition to position the Flinders Ranges as a globally competitive tourism destination, offering everything from luxury stays to deep nature immersion.

Despite all the changes, one thing that’s staying the same is that the business is family-run. Neville is working alongside his brothers Greg and Glenn, and parents Tony and Julie, who are remaining closely involved during the transition period. After all, their legacy is the foundation for everything that follows.

“While I am confident that I can bring my own experience and perspective to the business, it will always be with their legacy in mind.

“The values they’ve instilled in me from a young age will always be central to how we operate, including hard work, caring deeply about our guests, supporting each other and dreaming big. The way I see it, I’m not coming in to reinvent what they’ve built, but hopefully continue to build on it.”

So with major investment underway, new luxury accommodation on the horizon, and globally significant experiences being introduced, Rawnsley Park Station is entering its next chapter. For a property that began with sheep, a single cabin, and a vision for something more, the future is now under construction.
