Adelaide is heading into a changeable week, with a calm and cool Saturday giving way to a warmer, wetter Sunday before temperatures drop again early next week. For locals, that means a bit of everything over the next seven days: a few passing showers, a possible thunderstorm, gustier coastal winds and then a return to cooler, quieter spring conditions.
Today will stay fairly mild across Adelaide, with partly cloudy skies and just a slight chance of a shower through the morning and afternoon. Temperatures are only expected to reach 21 degrees in the city, with 20 at Glenelg, 21 at Elizabeth and 19 in Mount Barker. Winds will ease later in the day, making for a more settled evening after a breezy start.
Sunday is the standout change day. Adelaide is set for a sunny morning before cloud builds and showers develop through the afternoon and evening. There is also the chance of a thunderstorm later in the day, as warmer northerly winds lift the temperature to 28 degrees. It will feel quite different to Saturday, with a more spring-like burst of warmth before the next change moves through.
By Monday, that warmth slips away quickly. Adelaide is expected to cool sharply to a top of 19 degrees, with partly cloudy skies and a slight chance of a shower, most likely in the morning. There is also a chance of a thunderstorm early in the day before conditions begin to ease. South to southwesterly winds will freshen, adding a cooler feel around the city and suburbs.
Tuesday stays on the cool side, with cloudy conditions and only a slight chance of a shower. The city is forecast to reach 18 degrees after a chilly morning low of 10, with southerly winds keeping the air fresh. From there, the second half of the week looks steadier and fairly typical for mid-October.
Wednesday brings partly cloudy skies and a top of 19 degrees after a cold start of 9 degrees. Thursday remains mostly grey, with cloud hanging around and temperatures nudging up to 20 degrees. By Friday, conditions improve a touch, with partly cloudy skies and a forecast maximum of 22 degrees. It’s not shaping up as a particularly wet back half of the week, but it will stay cool enough that the mornings and evenings feel brisk.
Across regional South Australia, the bigger weather story sits away from the metro area. Light showers about southern agricultural districts should mostly clear today, while thunderstorms are possible in the far northeast. Sunday looks far more active, with showers and thunderstorms developing across the north and west before spreading into central and eastern parts later in the day. Severe thunderstorms are possible, with damaging wind gusts a risk across parts of the pastoral districts extending into the Eyre Peninsula. Monday keeps showers and storms going across central and eastern districts, with storms contracting north later in the day and a damaging wind gust risk remaining in the northeast. By Tuesday, cooler conditions spread more broadly, with isolated light showers in southern agricultural areas and further showers and storms in the north, especially the northwest. Rainfall totals to the end of Tuesday are generally expected to stay modest, but heavier local falls are possible under severe thunderstorms.
