The Big Table has always been a place to pull up a seat, order a big brekkie and watch the Adelaide Central Market hum around you.

Now, it has set an even bigger table.

After five months away from its longtime home, the Market favourite has returned to Stall 39–40 with a completely rebuilt kitchen, refreshed space and an expanded menu designed to take it well beyond its traditional breakfast offering.

The Big Table temporarily relocated to Stall 23 while its longtime shop was knocked down and rebuilt from the ground up.

Owner and operator Casper said the project was about far more than giving the stall a cosmetic update.

“The old shop hadn’t been designed for commercial kitchens,” Casper said.

“We designed the whole new kitchen with new equipment, a new range and a new exhaust system.”

The original kitchen had become too restrictive for the amount of food the team wanted to make, prompting a complete redesign that has added more preparation space.

The expanded kitchen has also opened the door for a broader menu.

While The Big Table’s established breakfast favourites remain, the team has introduced more lunch and Friday night dinner options, including one addition that is already proving particularly popular.

“No one’s doing yiros in the Central Market, so we made the decision to bring it to our menu,” Casper said.

Available with lamb, chicken or a combination of both, the new yiros were introduced after the team noticed strong demand for them across the CBD. Despite only being available for about a week, Casper said the yiros were already shaping up as one of the venue’s best sellers.

The expanded offering also includes a range of pita flatbreads with vegetarian, vegan and meat toppings.

The layout customers see from the Market floor has a new look too.

Where the original stall had bar sections running along multiple sides, the renovated venue now features one extended bar, alongside dedicated cashier and display areas and new refrigeration.

And there’s even more change on the horizon beyond the food and fit-out. The Big Table is currently waiting on its liquor licence, with plans to start pouring beer before potentially shaking up cocktails and expanding the drinks list based on what customers are thirsty for.

But for now, Casper and the team are excited to settle into their new home, that marks the end of a lengthy and tiring project.

“It means a lot to us because we designed the whole shop … It was a very tough project and all consuming, mentally, financially … but we are happy with the results.”

For longtime Market shoppers, much of what has made The Big Table familiar remains intact.

But behind the counter, the completely redesigned setup has given the team room to do considerably more as it begins its next chapter at the Adelaide Central Market.
