Adelaide is in for a fairly settled run through the working week, with chilly starts, light winds and only the odd passing shower before a wetter and windier change arrives just in time for the weekend.
For Tuesday, the city is staying mostly cloudy with just a slight chance of a morning shower and a top of 14 degrees. Winds will stay light, making for a calm, if cool, day across the metro area. Wednesday looks similar but a touch brighter, with partly cloudy skies, another slight chance of a shower, and temperatures slipping to 5 degrees overnight before recovering to 15 during the day. By Thursday, Adelaide should see the pick of the week, with sunny skies, light winds and a milder top of 17 degrees after an 8-degree start.
That settled pattern won’t last much longer. Friday begins sunny, but cloud is expected to build through the day as showers become more likely in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will lift to a more comfortable 20 degrees, with northerly winds strengthening through the day before tending northeasterly later on. It’s the first sign of a more active weather system moving closer to South Australia.
The weekend is shaping up as the wettest part of the forecast, and Adelaide residents may want to keep rain plans handy. Saturday is expected to turn properly showery, with a very high chance of rain and between 6 and 20mm possible. Winds will also pick up, shifting from north to northeasterly before turning northwesterly later, with gustier conditions likely to be noticed along the coast and around exposed suburbs. The temperature will ease back to 17 degrees.
Sunday stays cloudy and wet, with another very high chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm. Winds will be strong from the northwest before turning westerly in the morning, and that combination of rain and blustery conditions will make it feel colder than the forecast top of 15 degrees. Early next week, Adelaide should start to settle slightly, though Monday still carries a high chance of showers, especially in the morning, with a top of 15 degrees and brisk west to northwesterly winds turning northerly later in the day.
Across regional South Australia, the picture is broadly quiet through the middle of the week, but cold mornings will be a feature. Patchy morning fog is expected in agricultural areas and southern parts of the pastoral districts on Tuesday, followed by morning frost and possible fog on and east of the ranges on Wednesday and Thursday. Most districts are expected to stay dry through that period, with temperatures near average at first before edging to near or above average by Thursday.
By Friday, isolated showers are forecast to develop in the far west and spread east later in the day, with the chance of a thunderstorm in the far west. Fresh northerly to northwesterly winds are also expected over central districts. Rainfall totals to the end of Thursday are expected to stay low for most agricultural areas, with less than 2mm, while the far west could see 2 to 5mm. For coastal parts of metropolitan waters, conditions remain relatively smooth until Friday, with seas below 1 metre and light winds before showers become more likely.
