Adelaide’s 10 worst casualty crash intersections revealed

RAA has released the ten worst casualty crash intersections in Adelaide, with seven being in the northern suburbs.

Recent data analysis by the RAA has pinpointed the ten most hazardous intersections for casualty crashes within Adelaide, with an alarming seven out of these hotspots situated in the northern suburbs.

Topping the list is the junction of Marion Road and Sturt Road, which saw 40 casualty crashes in the span of five years, as reported by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. A staggering 78 per cent of these incidents involved vehicles coming from Marion Road.

Three intersections along Main North Road also made it to the list, a situation exacerbated by the burgeoning population in the northern suburbs and the heavy daily traffic volume exceeding 65,000 vehicles.

RAA’s Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure, Charles Mountain, emphasised the significance of the data.

‘Some of Adelaide’s worst intersections for casualty crashes are some of our busiest – and we’re urging drivers to be aware of where typically a lot of serious crashes occur’, Mr Moutain said.

‘But it is important to remember that these aren’t just numbers —each injury or fatality resulting from a crash has a lasting impact on the individuals involved, as well as their families and friends.’

Mountain further explained that the five-year data analysis uncovers trends, raising driver awareness and guiding infrastructural enhancements. He pointed out the high frequency of rear-end collisions during peak hours, and the considerable number of right-turn crashes at the Marion Road and Sturt Road intersection.

Of particular concern are the 18 intersections that have witnessed 20 or more casualty crashes in the last five years. Mountain noted that three of these are on the remaining 10 km section of the North-South Corridor (T2D), spotlighting a chance for substantial safety improvements through this project.

Encouragingly, safety upgrades are on the horizon for several of these high-risk areas.

‘It is good to see that five of the top 10 casualty crash intersections have either recently been upgraded or have a planning study or impending upgrade in the works’, said Mountain. ‘The second-worst intersection of Main North Road/Regency Road, for example, is currently undergoing planning discussions, which we look forward to seeing the outcome of.’

Recent improvements were undertaken at Curtis Road/Peachey Road, Briens Road/Grand Junction Road/Hampstead Road, and Stebonheath/Womma Road intersections.

‘RAA has previously advocated for further upgrades to be made to Curtis Road, to both improve safety and relieve congestion in the northern suburbs, as part of our annual state budget submissions’, says Moutain.

Mountain concluded with optimism for the southern regions, ‘Other intersections south of the city will greatly benefit with the major works on South Road as part of the T2D project.’

The RAA continues to play a pivotal role in bringing attention to traffic safety concerns and works in tandem with authorities to see a decrease in intersection-related casualties in the future.

Notes:

  1. Where there were intersections tied on the same total, the intersection with the highest number of crashes by severity was ranked higher.
  2. Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) data is sourced from LocationSA.
  3. An asterisk (*) denotes an intersection that has been improved since 2018. A double asterisk (**) denotes an intersection that has an upgrade planned or a planning study underway.
