Adelaide’s Famous Poffertjes Parlour has officially opened in the Adelaide Central Market for its month long pop-up.
Poffertjes are a small sweet treat that resembles a small fluffy pancake and often served with powdered sugar and sometimes cinnamon, creme and butter.
It was originally a dutch carnival treat from hundreds of years ago and today it’s still being enjoyed around the world.
Adelaide’s Famous Poffertjes Parlour has been thriving in this state for around 50 years and is using the family’s secret recipe which has been passed down for four generations.
“We’re the original poffertjes parlour in Adelaide. My mother brought idea here in 1971 and I have been a part its legacy since I was 15,” owner of Adelaide’s Famous Poffertjes Parlour Irene Tredrea says.
For years the stall has been seen at the Adelaide Fringe and for 35 years before COVID they were a staple at The Royal Show.
Now, its temporary home will be at the Adelaide Central Market leasing a spot on the Eastern Roadway.
“The market has been so supportive and making this position available for us. We’re basically returning to what feels like home as my mum was there running the stall in the 80s,” Irene says.
“It’s a central place for people with fantastic food. It’s definitely one of Adelaide’s best kept secrets.”
Irene created a new cart for the pop-up location which she is creating herself in traditional “old cart” style from generations ago. She’s re-used old copper which used to be the counter in their old popular crepe store Bruxelles on Henley Beach Road.
Irene says she’s excited to continue serving Adelaide the best Poffertjes on offer.
“There will be definitely be long lines and the market always closes on the dot, so make sure you don’t come too late and miss out,” Irene says.
