A colourful new event experience is popping up across Adelaide, allowing guests to choose fresh stems, learn the basics of floristry, and leave with a bouquet made entirely by hand.
Alex’s newly launched Bloom Bar brings a mobile flower station to hens parties, weddings, and private celebrations, with each setup tailored to the event’s colour palette and budget.
Less than a week after ordering the supplies, Alex has already locked in her first bookings. After spotting similar DIY flower bar experiences interstate, she realised Adelaide was missing out.
“I looked around and saw there were a few Bloom Bars in other states,” she says. “I couldn’t really see anything similar in Adelaide, and I thought, ‘There’s a gap in the market.'”
The concept is simple: she brings a mobile flower bar to your event, stocked with fresh blooms, wrapping paper, ribbons and everything needed to build your own bouquet. Guests choose a colour palette, learn how to prep their flowers and leave with an arrangement they’ve created themselves.
It’s less about floristry perfection and more about the experience, Alex says.
“It’s something I would 100 per cent do with my girlfriends on a weekend,” she says. “It’s all about making something beautiful, having fun and just enjoying being creative.”
Alex works full time as a writer, but has spent years attending floral workshops and events. Along the way she completed a florist course with a friend.
“It was a lot of fun,” she laughs. “We thought it was just going to be a low-key thing, but it was very serious.”
Since then she’s worked as a freelancer on the side of her day job, with Bloom Bar giving her a way to turn that passion into something more consistent.
The concept is simple, she says.
“I’ll run everyone through how to prep the flowers because that’s a really big part of it,” she says. “Then people can get to work making their bouquets.”
Each arrangement is wrapped and finished with ribbon so guests leave with a bouquet that’s ready to take home.
“This is just something fun to do that brings me joy,” she says. “Being able to share that knowledge and the fun of flowers with other people is really cool.”
She describes herself as the “yes friend”, the one who’s always keen to try something new.
“I love having friends who say, ‘Hey, I found this weird thing next Tuesday, do you want to come?’ I’ll always say yes.”
And that’s exactly the energy she hopes to bring to Bloom Bar, she says.
“For me, it’s just really wholesome. It’s all about the experience, the fun and the joy of doing something creative.”
“Everyone has exactly the same flowers to choose from, but everybody makes something completely different, and everything is equally as beautiful.”
