If your kids are the type to stop and stare whenever a big truck drives past, there’s a free family day coming to Morphett Vale that should be right up their alley.
Trucks on Tour is returning to Wilfred Taylor Reserve on Friday, October 9th, bringing a trucktacular day of vehicles, entertainment, food and hands-on activities to the southern suburbs.
Hosted by the City of Onkaparinga, the free community event runs from 10am to 2pm and is designed for children of all ages and their families.
The main attraction, of course, is the trucks, with little visitors able to climb into the driver’s seat, explore the inner workings of the vehicles and watch them in action.
SAPOL, emergency services and SA Power Networks will also be there, giving families the chance to get up close to some of the vehicles used to keep the community safe.
There will be plenty of horns honking, lights flashing and demonstrations throughout the morning, alongside a program of entertainment designed to keep the whole family busy.
Kids can try their hand at the pit stop challenge, jump behind the wheel of the go-karts and get their faces painted, while MC and live music from Dave Hull will provide the soundtrack.
Go-kart drivers will need enclosed-toe shoes, with helmets supplied or visitors welcome to bring their own.
There will also be plenty happening away from the trucks, with roving entertainment from Cosplay for a Cause and Pip the Fairy adding a little extra magic to the day.
Families can also head towards Christie Creek for the event’s ‘Walking Together with Kaurna’ program, which will explore the cultural and environmental significance of the area.
Interactive activities will give visitors the chance to learn about Kaurna tools and stories, caring for Country, local plants and animals, as well as play traditional Aboriginal games.
There will also be 30-minute guided creek and cultural walks exploring scar trees, the giant shield, local habitat and the area’s ancient Kaurna history.
A selection of food and drink vendors will also be serving up everything from coffee and crêpes to tacos, pizza, stroopwafels, fairy floss and potato on a stick.
Food vendors include MugShot Coffee Co, SLICE SLICE BABY, Fairy Floss Galore, Southern Vales Archery Club, Ye Olde Londoners, Taco Cartel, Friwi Crêpes & Co, Asian Aussie Street Food, Wild Woodfired Pizza, D and J Wines, What’s the Scoop and TaCHs Stroopwafels.
The event has also been designed with families who prefer a quieter environment in mind. From 1pm to 2pm, Trucks on Tour will hold a dedicated sensory hour, with horns and loud devices silenced and demonstrations finished for the final hour.
Spectrum Connect Inc. will also operate a sensory refuge and quiet activity zone throughout the event, providing families with a calmer space when needed.
There will be a speed reduction of 25km/h on Wheatsheaf Road along the stretch of Wilfred Taylor Reserve during the event as part of traffic safety measures.
With giant vehicles, emergency services, go-karts, live entertainment, cultural activities and plenty of food, Trucks on Tour is shaping up to be a big day out for families looking for something free to do these school holidays.
