Last year, we reviewed (and loved!) the highly anticipated memoir This is Not a Love Song, by former SA radio host and columnist Amber Petty. The ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne thwarted the South Australian launch of the book, which was originally scheduled to coincide with the book’s release last year.
With lockdowns hopefully behind us, Amber’s returning to Adelaide this July for a belated book celebration. Hosted by fellow South Aussie Shanelle Franklin, the event will feature conversation with Amber about her memoir.
Much of This is Not a Love Song, a memoir about mental health and love, was written about Amber’s time as a breakfast radio host for SAFM (2007- 2010) and a weekly columnist for The Adelaide Advertiser.
In this raw memoir, Amber speaks candidly about the toxic culture of FM radio, her secret battle with mental illness, and a violent relationship, all of which she hid during her four years on the air.
Arguably one of the most compelling parts of Amber’s story is the incredible catfishing saga which sucked in not just Amber, but her radio co-hosts and thousands of their listeners. The incident was featured on an episode of the US podcast Love+Radio, in conjunction with This American Life.
This is Not a Love Song will be available for purchase on the night and Amber will be signing copies.
