South Australia opened the first day of the Australian under 19 Softball Championships, held at West Beach, with a split, going down 2-1 to Western Australia before beating ACT 1-0 in extra innings.

Against WA, the local girls looked the better side for most of the game but surrendered the go-ahead run after a two-out error in the sixth frame.

Elly Beal had given SA the early lead with an RBI single in the second frame, which Western Australia matched two innings later.

Pitcher Steph Trzcinski was magnificent from the circle for SA, giving up three hits and no walks while striking out 14 batters – the SA line-up only recorded one strikeout!

Trzcinski had some satisfaction in the 8pm game against ACT with the 1-0 win – the first contest under the new West Beach lights.

The regulation seven innings were scoreless, with Jamie Mead laying down a one-out sacrifice bunt to score the first run of the game, in the eighth frame, which was enough for SA to win.

In another top-level pitching performance, Trzcinski went the distance, surrendering three hits and one walk, while striking out 12 batters.

SA play Victoria at 10am and NSW at 3pm on day two.
