Australians are banned from viewing news on Facebook: Here’s what it means for Glam

Here’s where you can find, follow, and support Glam Adelaide after Facebook’s decision to block posts from news outlets.

Australians woke up this morning unable to view posts from news outlets, Australian-based or international, on their Facebook feeds.

Facebook’s decision to restrict the nation’s users and ban its publications comes in response to the Australian government’s proposed laws that would force platforms like Facebook to pay Australian publishers for their content.

William Easton, the managing director of Facebook in Australia, says the proposed policy left Facebook “facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia,” and they are choosing the latter with a “heavy heart.”

According to Easton, last year, the platform generated more than 5 billion referrals to Australian news outlets, worth around AU$407 million.

Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg tweeted he had a “constructive discussion” with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s owner, this morning, and they “agreed to continue our conversation to try to find a pathway forward.”

In the meantime, however, Glam Adelaide is pivoting its social media content, utilising other platforms, and we would appreciate your support.
