Briony Stewart’s original children’s book about wayward dog Magoo was shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year: Early Childhood Prize. This follow-up adventure has ‘dogoo’ Magoo getting into all sorts of mischief and his owners constantly on the search for him.

Written and designed for pre-schoolers, the hardcover book features rounded corners and thick pages that won’t tear easily. The bright colours are appealing, and the story itself uses repetition to excite the listener.

Magoo! Magoo! Where are you, Magoo?” leads to each new hiding place and the mischief the pup is getting up to, from licking jam off a baby’s face, to exploring scraps in the rubbish bin.

The big font is matched by big illustrations that use a lot of bright colours and two double-page spreads for each adventure. Kids are invited to find Magoo’s tail as he disappears off the page in the first spread, then turn the page to discover the dog and his activity.

The loveable Magoo is drawn full of personality and anyone with a dog will recognise his behaviours–a great talking point for the family to be able to compare their own pet with Magoo.

Where are You, Magoo? has a real sense of fun about it. The story and character are appealing and both should engender lots of giggles and excitement each time it’s read.
