Cheong Liew creates exclusive culinary masterpiece at SkyCity for Lunar New Year

South Australian culinary icon Cheong Liew has partnered with SkyCity Adelaide to create an exclusive dish in celebration of Lunar New Year, available at Lucky Noodle.

Cheong’s dish, “The Good Omen Noodle”, embodies the tradition of new year wishes with each of its ingredients and its striking red and green colours, symbolising wealth and fortune.

The vibrant and luxurious noodle dish combines abalone (celebrating ‘abundance’), lobster and prawns (‘joy and happiness‘), duck (‘wealth and health’), black moss and dried scallop (‘prosperity’).

Lunar New Year is widely celebrated throughout Asia, commemorating the first lunar cycle of the year between new moon and full moon.

Adelaide has come alive for Lunar New Year this year with celebrations starting on the 21st January that have included dragon dances, pop up events and the closing of a major Adelaide street for a street party.

Lunar New Year 2023, the Year of the Rabbit, will be celebrated at SkyCity with this exclusive menu offering and lion dances performed over the coming weeks.

Malaysian-born Cheong Liew (pictured at SkyCity Adelaide’s ground floor Lucky Noodle restaurant) continues to play a defining role in South Australian dining by bringing his unique perspective to this celebration.

Cheong’s culinary legacy began in Adelaide in the 1970s at Neddy’s, followed by global acclaim as Head Chef of The Grange restaurant at the Hilton Hotel.

Cheong shared his expertise with the talented kitchen at Lucky Noodle, working closely on-site with Sous Chef Johnny Zhong to prepare and plate the dish in line with his vision.

Cheong said: “I’ve designed this dish for the Lunar New Year to help people not just celebrate the new year, but also to bring prosperity to them. Every bowl should be a wish and a gift for those who enjoy it.”
