If dumplings, yum cha and lunch with a city view sound like your kind of day out, New Shanghai’s Burnside Village restaurant should be firmly on your radar.
The popular Chinese restaurant is preparing to open its second South Australian home on the second floor of Burnside Village, with an almost 600 square metre venue featuring balcony seating, private dining rooms and a dedicated dumpling kitchen.
Co-owners David Wang and John Zhang are excited to finally open the doors after more than a year of preparation.
The Burnside location has been designed to feel noticeably different from its sister venue. pairing traditional Chinese dishes with a more elevated dining experience and a fit-out with its own personality. Green and red interiors will draw inspiration from traditional Chinese design, fully immersing diners in the atmosphere from the moment they walk in.
One of the biggest drawcards will be the outdoor balcony, which is set to seat up to 80 people.
“It’ll be a nice place to have dinner … with a city view,” David said.
Inside, there will be room for around 150 to 180 diners, along with three private dining rooms for groups wanting a more intimate space. The restaurant will surround a large bar with seating wrapped around it, a deliberate move to make drinks a bigger part of the Burnside experience.
Rather than simply recreating its existing Churchill restaurant, the team is putting more emphasis on fresh seafood alongside the dishes New Shanghai regulars already know. That means diners can still expect handmade soup dumplings and traditional favourites such as honey chicken and sweet and sour pork, while weekends will bring smaller yum cha options to the table.
And if you’re the kind of person who is mesmerised by dumplings being folded through a restaurant window, this one will be worth a look. New Shanghai will have two separate kitchens, including a dedicated dumpling kitchen positioned so diners, and even people walking by, can enjoy the process.
“People can actually see how they make it … freshly made every single morning,” David said.
It’s a small detail, but one that will put one of New Shanghai’s most recognisable traditions on show from the moment people arrive.
Between the balcony, central bar, private dining rooms, fresh seafood and live dumpling-making, the Burnside restaurant is shaping up to be much more than a straightforward second location, with plenty of reasons to make a long lunch or dinner out of it.
