After building a loyal following from its home base in Findon, Shapeshifter Brewing is expanding with a second location in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD.
Known for its bold and ever-changing range of locally brewed craft beers, the brewery will open a new venue within the Adelaide Central Market expansion.
Set to finish towards the end of the year, the expansion is bringing in more vendors, more people and all in a fresh new space.
Shapeshifter’s concept will feature a 100-seat venue, shaded outdoor seating, branded merchandise and takeaway beer options for shoppers on the move. While there’s a range of great drink options at the markets, Shapeshifter are filling the gap in beer offerings.
Co-founder of Shapeshifter Brewing, James McCall said the focus is on educating customers on the history and process of creating craft beer.
“The idea is that people visiting the market, whether they’re locals, interstate or international visitors, or people meeting us for the first time, have the best beer experience possible,” James said.
“We’ll also make sure every beer is served properly according to its style, with different glassware to suit each type of beer we pour.”
The Shapeshifter team had always wanted to expand, and when the opportunity arose within the Central Market, it was a no-brainer.
“The Central Market is South Australia’s number one tourist attraction, so it really made perfect sense.”
The second venue will give city shoppers and visitors the chance to discover locally brewed beer, while also creating a potential new destination for after-work drinks.
“There are so many fantastic craft breweries here in South Australia,” James said.
“If we can provide a good experience for someone trying craft beer for the first time, they might become more interested in craft beer overall.”
With millions of people passing through the Adelaide Central Market each year, James said Shapeshifter’s popular Party Shirt pale ale would be a good starting point for newcomers.
“It’s a lovely tropical and fruity five per cent pale ale,” James said.
“For someone who has tried beers such as Stone & Wood, or is looking for something with a little more flavour but nothing too extreme, Party Shirt would probably be the first beer we recommend.”
Shapeshifter Brewing’s flagship venue and brewery is located about 15 minutes from the Adelaide CBD in Findon.
Alongside its onsite brewing operations, the venue is home to a rotating taproom that regularly comes to life on weekends with food trucks and live music.
The new location will sit opposite Her Majesty’s Theatre on Grote Street, making it a convenient option for drinks before or after a performance.
“There will be a small drinks hub, with us alongside Hotel Metropolitan and Never Never a couple of doors away.
“We’re hoping it turns into a cool local drinks precinct, whether people are going to see a show or looking for somewhere to have a drink before or afterwards.”
Until the new venue opens, customers can visit Shapeshifter’s Findon brewery to try its core range, new releases and limited-edition beers.
