Elizabeth ice arena construction to start next year

Construction of a multi-sports entertainment venue in the Northern suburbs, which includes an ice arena, is planned to begin next year.

Construction on a new multi-sports arena entertainment venue in the Northern Suburbs could start as soon as the first quarter of next year.

Led by Australian developer Pelligra, who are also involved with the $20 million ‘Marion Arena,’ the facility has been approved by the Playford City Council and will be located in Elizabeth on the southern corner of Main North Road and Philip Highway.

The sports entertainment venue will include an indoor ice sports arena, elite rock-climbing facility, two indoor sports courts and gymnasium – supported by a restaurant and other hospitality tenancies.

In August 2022, the City of Playford resolved to accept an offer by Pelligra Group to purchase and develop two specific sites within the Elizabeth CBD. Council will partner closely with Pelligra on the proposal.

The project is one of two to set to expand the Elizabeth CBD, with plans for a Playford Innovation Hub on Main North Road also in the pipeline, which planning consent was approved for this year.

The hub will be up to eight storeys high and offer space for entrepreneurial start-ups, high growth companies and accelerator programs, along with a café and landscaped forecourt.

The City of Playford’s renewed focus on the Elizabeth CBD began mid-2021 when it went to open market through an Expression of Interest process for development partners.

The community wanted a vibrant city centre which offered experiences and activation at more times of the day and at more times of the year and the City of Playford wanted to ensure any private development met these needs, believing Pelligra’s planned developments met these expectations.

The residential growth of the Elizabeth CBD is expected to reach 132,000 people by 2036, with further growth in areas around the city such as Gawler, Light and the Barossa.
