Everest Dominates Opening Athletics SA Winter Event

FlindersFlinders distance runner and National Open steeplechase silver medallist, Richard Everest, put in a dominate display on his home track to take out the first state championship of the season at Flinders University last Friday night.

After pushing Beijing Olympic steeplechase finalist Youcef Abdi up until the final lap of the 3000m steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games trials in Perth last month, Everest took control of the 4km open men’s race shortly after half way to record a comfortable victory over Adelaide Harriers runner, Chris Hartley.

Everest will now focus his attention on the European athletics season as he seeks a maiden Commonwealth Games qualifier to make a late bid for selection to the Australian team for the Delhi Games in October.

On a perfect night for athletics, Hills club veteran Lisa Davis was an ecstatic winner of the open women’s 4000m, clinching her first open state title – a deserved reward for a long standing commitment to participating in Athletics SA events. World Junior Cross Country representative, Demi Wood, continued her great run of form winning the under 20 women’s 4000m, whilst Flinders runner, Dion Byas, took out the over 35 men’s event.

The junior races saw some great action with the in-form pocket-dynamo Riley Cocks recording a swift victory under 16 boys 2000m. Meanwhile, older brother Jacob was narrowly beaten to the line by national junior steeplechase champion, Luke Hargreaves in the under 18 4000m. Another national junior steeplechase champion in Leila Johnson, recorded a commanding victory in the under 18 girls 4000m, whilst Jessica Oates and the consistent Shae Grieger recorded victories in the under 14 and under 16 age groups respectively.
