FIRST LOOK: Dawn Patrol is a caffeinated Cellar Door in the heart of McLaren Vale

Dawn Patrol has opened in McLaren Vale, but it’s far from the average SA cafe. It’s an actual coffee cellar door with two coffee specialists at the helm.

Baristas, bean-brew crews and coffee cup connoisseurs – assemble!

Dawn Patrol has opened in McLaren Vale, but it’s far from the average SA cafe, with co-owners Nick Suggitt and Dom Ossa honing their craft and retaining their credentials as bona fide specialists in the fields of coffee and bagels.

“Probably 2011, maybe 2012, we were looking at opening up a coffee shop in the Adelaide CBD, with no options for locally baked bagels,” said Dom Ossa.

From Sad Cafe on Ebeneezer Place, which served steaming mugs of morning coffee almost 15 years ago until today, Dom’s niche interest in bagels has remained a staple of their caffeinated ventures.

“Then I got wind of Holy Mother of Bagels, and they do a boiled and baked bagel that’s New York-styled, so that’s where we went,” Dom added.

The guided coffee experience in McLaren Vale is held in the new Dawn Patrol space, which is an old tractor shed, that’s open to the public seven days a week. Prior to the tractor spot, the dynamic duo were up at Chandlers Hill with Watkin Wines, where they poured out wake-up juice for two years.

Much like the highly concentrated and well-vetted menu at Dawn Patrol, the decision to leave Watkins Cellar Door was borne out of growth.

“It’s been going really well since we opened. It’s nice to have our own location and have the room to grow,” Dom says.

While the roaster isn’t in the main warehouse, it’s in adjacent, larger warehouse.

“It’s more accessible since we first opened and now the public can see the coffee process which is cool,” Dom says.

The pair have stressed that Dawn Patrol isn’t a cafe and once the roastery is under the same roof, the espresso and filter flights will be an educational experience that draws on the knowledge that they’ve accrued through decades of effort. The public will get to see the whole process that goes into the perky perfect end product that they get to taste at the very end.

“Obviously everyone loves the coffee, but the tasting flights have been people’s most popular indulgence,” Some says.

100% sustainable, traceable and single origin brew is awaiting you at McLaren Vale.
