Former East End Cellars’ sous-chef opens Woodville’s newest cafe Bread & Butter

New cafe in Woodville, Bread and Butter, is serving up delicious brunch options from buttermilk hot cakes to house-made meatballs.

The ex sous-chef for Adelaide’s renowned East End Cellars has been dreaming of owning a cafe his whole life. Now, a combination of perfect timing and savings means Sittichai Bunlung now owns Woodville’s newest cafe ‘Bread & Butter’.

True to its name, the first thing on the menu is bread and butter (of course). Though, there are more tempting menu items, including buttermilk hot cake with caramelised apple, miso butterscotch and Biscoff crumble with vanilla ice cream — yum!

There’s also savoury options like house-made meatballs with scrambled eggs, salsa and sourdough. Would you like to add mushroom chips with aioli as a side dish? Yes please. To top it off they sell a Wagu Beef burger for $20.

The new venue has an open and refreshing vibe with a huge mural on the side of the building as you enter, you’re then greeted by wooden tabletops, pendent lighting, pot plants and more a cute corner store feel. If you think the space looks familiar, the location was once home to Burek Lounge, then Barbeque Brother and more recently Loca Boys.

Their Instagram was been passed down through owners, meaning the word spread about their grand opening on Sunday, which owner Sutti says was ‘busier than expected’.

Affectionately known as Sutti, Bunlung runs the cafe alongside his family, with his wife managing the counter and his sister-in-law crafting coffee delights while he takes charge as the head chef and owner.

Born in Thailand and raised in the United States, Sutti moved to Australia 10 years ago and pursued culinary study in William Angliss Institute in Melbourne.

Since then, he’s endured a heated season in Cairns as a sponsored chef at Vivo, which he describes as ‘the best cafe in Palm Cove’. He worked as a chef for five years in Sydney and only moved to Adelaide one year ago.

Sutti says Bread & Butter takes elements of Melbourne and Sydney’s cuisine and brings it into Adelaide. He says now is the perfect time to open a new cafe, with South Australian venues continuing to expand.

“Adelaide is growing compared to last year. There are a lot of new businesses starting,” Sutti says.

Sutti’s warm hospitality has already earned him regulars who grab a coffee every morning. “I’m slowly getting to know them,” he laughs.

If a $20 burger and a happy family-run business isn’t convincing enough, then hear this: Bread & Butter in Woodville is dog friendly. You can hang out in the backyard, drink a coffee while you snuggle up to big, furry, pooches.
