Edinburgh Festival’s sold-out show comes to Adelaide with an international, award-winning cast. Appraisal will be at the Goodwood Institute as part of the Adelaide Fringe for its Australian Premiere.
After its debut season at the Assembly Powder Room in August 2022, this brand-new play, written by award-winning writer, Tim Marriott (Brittas Empire, Mengele, Shell Shock) will open in February.
Jo, a senior manager, needs to appraise head of department Nicky’s work. Nicky just wants to keep
working. What follows is a two-handed drama about an annual work review that goes horribly wrong.
In a contemporary portrayal of power and manipulation in the workplace, Appraisal explores the explosive consequences arising out of a seemingly innocent conversation.
Appraisal explores how, despite corporate and government commitment to level the playing field, these hierarchical structures are unyielding against modernisation efforts.
Appraisal will be performed by London’s Nicholas Collett, decorated actor, director and producer
working in television, theatre and radio, and winner of British Arrows Best Performance Award 2016. Collett will perform alongside Adelaide’s own Emily-Jo Davidson, Flinders’ University graduate, choreography and seasoned performer, most recently in The White Mouse (2021).
The Edinburgh Review praised the debut show, with a glowing 5-star review which writes “absolutely excellent play to watch. So clever. Dramatic, comedic, and a sudden pratfall that I wasn’t
expecting that was hilarious.”
Edinburgh Guide were just as pleased, giving Appraisal quite the appraisal with yet another 5-star review, stating “the well measured tone and tempo of the dialogue meanders around a convoluted maze of twists and turns with humorous, dramatic punch.”
