Cast reviewed: Madly Scrumptious Cast

This script by Richard M Sharman and Robert B Sharman is full of fun characters and crazy situations. Adelaide Theatre Academy has brought a youthful and enthusiastic show to the Norwood stage. The cast is presenting this tricky show with flair. Strong performers in the lead roles carry the show along smoothly with fast changes executed by the busy cast.

Ethan Joy is strong as Caractacus Potts, the ditzy inventor, managing to convince as the father despite his age. As Grandfather Potts Jayden Ayling gathers in the laughs, playing the character with obvious delight. Amelia Lees and Elliot Purdie are well-cast as Jemima and Jeremy, Potts working well together. Amber Fibrosi shines as Truly Scrumptious doing justice to the music with her lovely voice.

The Baron and Baroness Bomburst, played by James Pearce and Vasileia Markou were just as silly as they are meant to be, going over the top just the right amount. Emma Palumbo and Jenna Saint are the personifications of crazy spies selling all the jokes well. Lachlan Anderson is (intentionally) horrid as the Childcatcher and Tom Terrell is charming as the Toymaker, Claire Saint is hilarious as Lord Scrumptious, and all are supported by a strong chorus.

The sets by Michael Eustice and Sharon Malujlo are simple but enhanced by the projections which provide backdrops and movement. The car is very impressive and appears to fly! The complete look is achieved with help of Emily Jaensch’s costumes and the lighting design by Chris Iasiello and Georgia Brass.

It is a shame that as with many amateur youth shows the sound is uneven. Microphones for all are prohibitively expensive and young voices often don’t carry well, but this is a minor point. This is a fun show enjoyed by young and old.
