A Fringe show that’s full of all the verve, vitality and camp you expect from a show that has been touring for a while, and picking up a few awards on the way. If you are a music theatre tragic, this is the show for you. The jokes and references to all the shows you know and love, come thick and fast. From the opening, cleverly styled by Jamie Burgess and leaving you wondering where the inspiration comes from, The Lion King? Book of Mormon – no, Cats! His pussy is a dead give-away! To the mirror-ball blue sequinned dress that catapults Ms Aitken onto the stage and unleashes her extraordinary voice on us – this show is pure, unadulterated camp entertainment.
The parody that becomes the central theme of the cabaret is funny and witty, perhaps a little overwritten at times, but it does not detract from the fun and frolics that Burgess and Aitken get up to on stage. This, interwoven with some personal reminiscences, makes for a fast-moving, fast-acting piece of work which is an hour well spent in the theatre.
Some snappy cossie changes, some fast wig action and some very sparkly lighting effects underpin the exceptional keyboard and vocal skills of Mr Burgess, and the glory of Nikki Aitken’s voice is worth the price of the ticket on its own. Go see it, it’s a really fun show which left the audience at The Noel Lothian Hall yelling for more; it is a fast moving and highly entertaining hour of fun.
