Fringe Review: Moist

A queer, soaking wet take on a fringe circus show.

In the Fringe guide Moist teases very little about their production, leaving the fun of the show for those in the audience.

Moist is a contemporary circus and physical theatre production featuring The Mighty Caesar, Reece Cooper, Timothy Christopher Ryan and Peter Welters. There is a loose narrative of Ryan being incredibly thirsty and hoping that one of his three exes (the remaining trio) might be able to help him out.

The plot points act as a spacer for the scene changes and is the main direct interaction with the audience. There’s a level of pantomime to this part of the show and adds to the many styles of performance that are loaded into Moist.

The main sections of the show are feats of circus stunts and queers twists on physical theatre. These are all fun and impressive displays with time for each to show what they and their bodies can do. The show builds to bigger stunts and an artistic climax.

The show is backed by an upbeat, disco heavy soundtrack and fluoro props. It has some subtle and a lot of not so subtle innuendos, all performed with a cheekiness that felt like the performers were enjoying being in on the jokes.

As the name implies there is a lot of moisture in the show. Moist doesn’t really cover how soaked the stage and performers get throughout the show. The leotard and jockstrap outfits cop the most of the bubbles and splashing but the front couple rows do end up in the splash zone.

Moist is a very queer take on circus, at times just some stupid fun, but thoroughly amusing show.

Moist is running many shows at Latvian Hall’s Large Hall in Wayville until the end of the Fringe 2022 season.
