Global fashion icon NIGO of KENZO designs first-ever Penfolds Grange limited edition

South Australian icon Penfolds is celebrating its 180th anniversary with an exclusive collaboration between themselves and NIGO, the Creative Director of Human Made and Artistic Director of KENZO.

This week has been historic for Penfolds, as the renowned winemaker unveils its latest collaboration, the Grange by NIGO.

In celebration of Penfolds’ 180th anniversary, NIGO, the Creative Director of Human Made and Artistic Director of KENZO, lends his visionary touch to the iconic Grange, reimagining its packaging design for a limited-edition series.

NIGO’s inspiration for the collaboration stemmed from his inaugural visit to Penfolds Magill Estate Winery in South Australia in 2022. Immersed in the rich heritage of Penfolds and fueled by his passion for the craft, NIGO embarked on a journey to infuse his signature style into the essence of Grange.

“I have been a collector of Grange for many years, but it wasn’t until I visited Penfolds Magill Estate that I truly understood the craftsmanship and history behind the historic wine,” NIGO said. “It was an honour to be the first person to collaborate on a design for Grange, especially as the brand celebrates its 180th anniversary.”

The Grange by NIGO release comprises collectible 750ml and 1.5L gift boxes housing the 2019 Grange. Limited to 1,500 and 150 units respectively, each box is adorned with a vibrant grape graphic and Penfolds logo reimagined through Human Made’s iconic typography. Accompanying the bottles are a bespoke bandana, bottle neck tag, and authenticity certificate, all designed by NIGO himself.

“Collaborating with NIGO has been inspired by Penfolds’ history of pushing boundaries in winemaking, and now we expand this to exploration of new creative ideas,” Kristy Keyte, Penfolds Chief Marketing Officer, said.

“As a collector, NIGO understands the reputation of Grange and its legacy. He was able to create a limited-edition approach that is both playful and fresh while remaining respectful to the history of the wine.”

In addition to the limited-edition packaging, NIGO extends his artistic vision to a series of silk rugs, with only 25 available globally.

Handwoven by artisans in Nepal, each rug features a purple grape design mirroring the wine’s secondary pack. These exclusive rugs, measuring 2.5m x 2.5m, are made available through expressions of interest at select retailers.

The launch of Grange by NIGO follows the unprecedented success of NIGO’s first Penfolds project, One by Penfolds, which saw global apparel items selling out in under 1.5 hours. With the Grange by NIGO collaboration, Penfolds continues its legacy of innovation, bridging the worlds of fine wine and contemporary artistry.
