Iconic Glenelg restaurant to close its doors

Adelaide’s dining scene has taken another hit with the unexpected closure of Cardone’s, a beloved Glenelg restaurant that’s been a staple for locals and visitors for years.

The doors will shut for the last time on Wednesday, 6th March marking the end of an era for the iconic spot known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious meals.

The team at Cardone’s made the tough call to close down, pointing to a mix of pandemic aftereffects, rising costs, and unpredictable business as the main culprits.

“It is incredibly hard to find the words….” the team said in a Facebook status.

“Since the pandemic business has been very tough and we have never completely recovered…. The cost of living, interest rate increases, a significant rise in operational/produce/beverage costs & inconsistent trade patterns have all contributed to this heartbreaking decision.”

It’s a familiar story lately, with the hospitality sector facing a rough time all around. Another casualty, Lost in a Forest, echoed the struggle many Adelaide eateries are enduring, with operational headaches and financial pressures forcing beloved spots to call it quits.

The closure notice from Cardone’s team, filled with gratitude for customers, staff, and suppliers, reflects the deep connections forged over the table. It’s a stark reminder of the challenges local businesses face and the importance of supporting them.

With Cardone’s and others like Lost in a Forest bowing out, it’s a wake-up call for us to rally around our local haunts. These closures show the fragility of the food scene and the need for both community support and smart business strategies to navigate these tough times.

“Cardone’s has been a huge part of the Glenelg landscape for such a long time. We are extremely proud of what our little restaurant has achieved over the years. We truly love what we do, and are forever grateful for the experiences & memories made.”
