Following her sensational sold-out Australian tour in 2024, Macy Gray returns for her largest ever tour of Australia this September/October, and this time she’s going further than ever before!
Macy will be returning to every city she sold out as well as taking her music to regional destinations right around Australia. This is not just a concert tour – it is a festival of soul.
With over 25 million records sold worldwide, a Grammy Award, two BRIT Awards, and 10 studio albums spanning more than two decades, Macy Gray is one of the greatest R&B and soul artists of her generation, and Australia and New Zealand loved her first. I Try went straight to number one both here and in New Zealand, while On How Life Is topped the Australian charts and spent 44 weeks on the New Zealand albums chart a long time before America fully caught on.
Glam Adelaide spoke to Macy about her upcoming tour, her music, and what it is about Australia and Australian audiences that keeps her coming back to our shores to perform.
“Australians seem to have really good taste in music. We always have a lot of fun performing in Australia. People sometimes don’t understand the importance of the audience when we get up there. It’s on us to be entertaining, but the audience plays such a big part in how the show goes and how they respond.”
Twenty-seven years ago, Macy burst onto the Australian charts with I Try, which resulted in Macy being awarded the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance awards at the 2001 Grammys as well as receiving nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
“I Try still streams like 4 million times a month. It’s pretty incredible – nobody is more shocked than I am, trust me. It’s pretty incredible when I do shows and everybody still knows the words and they still know the ad-libs. It’s cool.”
Macy will soon be releasing her new album The Trouble with the Truth, and Australia will be the first country that Macy will tour after the album’s release.
We asked Macy where she draws inspiration from when writing new music and albums.
“It’s a lot of practice. These days I can find inspiration anywhere. You get better and better the more you do it. I used to think I had to, you know, have a really bad relationship and be miserable to be a proper artist and write songs. But now that I’ve got my stride, I can write a sad song while being happy with my life.”
As part of Macy’s Australian tour, she will be taking her show to several smaller cities around the country, not just the capitals.
“It’s really important, you know. I’m from a small town, and I would have loved big acts coming through to perform. I think it’s great if you live in a small town and you don’t have to drive three hours to see your favourite band. So I’m really proud that we’re doing that, and I’m excited. I think it’s going to be cool.”
Macy will be performing in Adelaide at the Hindley Street Music Hall on Saturday 12th September.
“We’re all gonna have a really good time. I hope people come out and party with us. We just dance and sing songs—it’s like being at a wedding reception. It’s just fun, you know. We all need a break from whatever life is throwing at us. I’ll be performing all my old songs as well as numbers from my new album, which I cannot wait to share with Australia.”
