Major supermarket announced for Adelaide’s Market Square redevelopment

Coles Local and Liquorland have joined the growing retail line-up at Adelaide’s $600 million Market Square development, alongside Sushi Hub, W Cosmetics and several new dining, beauty and service operators.

Coles Local and Liquorland have been confirmed among the growing list of retailers joining Adelaide’s $600 million Market Square development.

The neighbourhood-style supermarket will occupy approximately 1,700 square metres on Level 1 of the new precinct, alongside a neighbouring 236-square-metre Liquorland.

Rather than operating as a traditional full-sized supermarket, the Coles Local store will offer everyday essentials, fresh produce and a curated selection of South Australian, artisan and specialty products.

The format has been chosen to complement the existing traders at the Adelaide Central Market while giving city residents, workers and visitors access to groceries beyond traditional market trading hours.

Coles State Leasing Manager David Ivey said the new store had been designed with the surrounding community in mind.

“We’re excited to bring a new Coles Local supermarket to Adelaide’s iconic Market Square and the surrounding community,” David said.

“The new store will offer a modern, convenient shopping experience, with great value everyday essentials, quality fresh produce and locally sourced products from South Australian suppliers.”

Coles Local and Liquorland join several newly announced Market Square tenants, including W Cosmetics, Sushi Hub, Smart iTech Mobile, David’s Master Pot, Fandi Scissorhands and The Nail Bar.

An internationally recognised bubble tea brand has also been secured, although its identity is yet to be revealed.

Further retailer announcements are expected in the coming weeks as the development moves towards welcoming its first visitors later this year.

ICD Property CEO Matthew Khoo said the retail mix had been carefully selected to complement the Adelaide Central Market rather than compete with it.

“From day one, our vision has been to create a destination that complements the Adelaide Central Market, the iconic anchor of Market Square, not compete with it,” Matthew said.

“Our goal has always been to curate a retail mix that feels authentic to this location. Coles Local achieves that by bringing together everyday convenience with a strong focus on South Australian producers and quality local food.”

The Market Square development is replacing the former Central Market Arcade and will include an expanded Adelaide Central Market precinct, Australia’s first Treehouse Hotel, 234 residential apartments and a nine-storey office tower.

Once complete, the mixed-use destination will bring together shopping, dining, accommodation, workplaces and residential living in the heart of Adelaide.

The precinct is expected to attract an additional one million visitors each year and further strengthen the Adelaide Central Market district as one of the city’s leading food and lifestyle destinations.

Market Square is scheduled to open later in 2026, with more retailers and hospitality operators to be announced ahead of its launch.
