McLaren Vale’s Orbis Wines takes crown as Young Gun of Wine 2023 Winner

McLaren Vale’s Orbis Wines has taken the crown as Young Gun of Wine 2023 Winner.

In a night celebrating the innovation and creativity of Australia’s winemaking industry, Lauren Langfield from Orbis Wines emerged as the triumphant winner of the prestigious Young Gun of Wine 2023 award.

This highly anticipated event showcased the rising stars of the wine scene, recognising their talent, passion, and contribution to the industry.

Lauren Langfield, with her extensive experience in vineyards and expertise in organics, biodynamics, and regenerative agriculture, embarked on her winemaking journey under her own label in the 2021 vintage. This significant milestone coincided with her appointment as winemaker at the McLaren Vale winery.

While winemaking is a vital aspect of her role at Orbis, Langfield’s responsibilities extend far beyond that. Collaborating with renowned viticulturist Richard Leask, Lauren focuses on cultivating sustainable and regenerative practices throughout the vineyard.

The Young Gun of Wine awards have become a hallmark event in the Australian wine industry, shining a spotlight on emerging talent and pushing the boundaries of winemaking.

This year’s winners include Stoke Wines, Rivulet Wines, Tillie J Wines, Cavedon Wines King Valley, and Cave Wines, who were acknowledged for their exceptional contributions to the craft.

The ‘Young’ in the Young Gun of Wine Awards (YGOW) refers to young wine labels, and while the awards don’t focus on specific date of birth, the winemakers are all under 45 years of age.

In order to be in the running for an award, the winemaker must submit two commercially available wines, and the panel of industry leaders then assess the quality, the appeal and interest of the wine, and then a bigger picture discussion of the winemaker and the product in a wholistic sense.

Orbis Wines’ victory highlights the dynamic and vibrant nature of the Australian wine industry. As the winner, they join the ranks of past winners who have gone on to achieve great success and acclaim in the wine world.
