New SA native plant mural has blossomed on North Adelaide’s Majestic Minima Hotel

The work of SA painter and muralist, Jasmine Crisp, is now proudly on display, giving Minima’s front façade a brand new look this summer.

Melbourne Street in North Adelaide has gotten a lot more beautiful lately with the introduction of a striking new mural across the front walls of the Majestic Minima Hotel.

The work of South Australian painter and muralist, Jasmine Crisp, is now proudly on display, giving Minima’s front façade a brand new look this summer.

Minima prides itself on being a blank canvas for various artists to showcase their talents, on full display to the busy and vibrant North Adelaide hub. Formerly a bright blue colour, Minima now has three native South Australian plants boldly painted across its dreamy, dusty pink walls.

Jasmine’s concept is the ‘Fruits of Adelaide’, embracing the native foods of the local landscape in a bright, luscious arrangement. These will be a great talking point for celebrating the expanded range of South Australia’s native flora and fauna, often left uncaptured.

Jasmine’s artwork showcases the iconic quandong (Santalum acuminatum) the red fruited flora, the native apricot or ‘weeping pittosporum’ (Pittosporum angustifolium) seen as the yellow fruited blooms, and finally, some of the ripened berries from the Creeping Boobialla (Myoporum parvifolium).

The ‘Fruits of Adelaide’ reflects Jasmine’s specific artistic style or “painting language”, which utilises traditional painting techniques and brush work to produce “narrative fuelled imagery” and “symbolic storytelling”.

“I’m a naturalist painter, which means I paint the world in the way a human experiences it to be and not exactly how it is. Also, I consider myself a narrative painter, which involves a lot of symbolism to tell specific stories,” Jasmine told Glam in June, when discussing her Rundle Place mural, ‘She knew the way by heart’.

The Minima mural is just the latest of Jasmine’s impressive portfolio of works, some of which includes the Yorketown Water Tower, Rockford Hotel mural (2020), Seven Grounds mural, and more.

Minima was given the opportunity to refresh its front façade as part of the Adelaide City Council Mainstreet and Laneways Revitalisation and Improvement Grants 2022/2023.

Located in the heart of North Adelaide, Majestic Minima Hotel features 46 compact art rooms with a modern and creative appeal, both inside and out. What makes Minima unique is that every guest room is different, with a selection of South Australian artists commissioned to paint a room over the years, representing their vision along the theme of ‘creativity and creation’.
