Opa Alfajores brings a delicious slice of Uruguay to the CBD

The CBD has welcomed a brand new Uruguay-inspired cafe, Opa Alfajores, that gives a nice twist on delicious sweet treats.

The newly opened Uruguayan-style bakery café, Opa Alfajores is a journey from South America to Australia, and the delicious treats that have accompanied the creators every step of the way.

Born and raised in Uruguay, Sharon and Pablo found themselves drawn to the vibrant culture and welcoming atmosphere of Adelaide over five years ago, and began to seek to share a piece of their new homeland with their new community.

“In the thick of the global pandemic, we took a leap of faith and began crafting alfajores – those irresistible sandwich biscuits filled with dulce de leche that have captured the hearts (and taste buds) of everyone,” Sharon said.

From humble beginnings baking in their own kitchen, Sharon and Pablo quickly found themselves gracing the stalls of the Adelaide Farmers Market and their alfajores becoming a sought-after delight among market-goers and café patrons alike.

Fuelled by their passion for sharing the flavours of home, Pablo, who is the chef behind the tasty treats, expanded the repertoire to include medialunas, those delectable small croissants, and an array of pastries.

“As the demand grew, it became clear that our creations needed a permanent home and that is how our micro bakery café was born.”

Once you step inside their Pultney Street cafe, you’ll find yourself enveloped in the warmth and aroma of a typical Uruguayan café. And what’s a café without coffee? Their single origin brew, sourced all the way from Colombia and roasted right here in Adelaide, promises to keep you wanting more with each sip.

“Our open kitchen invites guests to witness the magic as we craft each treat from scratch, using only the finest locally-sourced ingredients,” Sharon said.

“It’s been a hell of a ride but we are very excited about what we’ve achieved, all this having a 3 month old baby.”

So, whether you’re craving a sweet indulgence or simply seeking a slice of South American hospitality, why not head to Opa Alfajores and enjoy a piece of Uruguay in the heart of Adelaide. After all, there’s nothing quite like the comfort of a freshly baked treat to brighten your day.
