Paolo Sebastian reveals exquisite new collection inspired by Greek mythology

Paolo Sebastian’s latest collection, Persephone, is inspired by Greek mythology and it’s a masterpiece.

Paolo Sebastian presents its 2021 Spring / Summer Couture Collection, Persephone, inspired by the Greek goddess.

Drawing vision from the duality of seasons, the complexities of love, and the beauty of Greek mythology, Paolo Sebastian continues to create breathtaking works of art.

The collection follows Persephone’s journey to becoming the Goddess of Spring and Queen of the Underworld. For those who are not familiar with the tale, Persephone was seized by Hades and drawn into the Underworld, where he would make her his queen.

“The collection follows a narrative, which starts out as pure and light in the beginning, becomes darker and returns back to the light again with flowers blossoming. However, Persephone is stronger and less naïve and vulnerable at the end of the story,” explains Creative Director and Designer, Paul Vasileff.

Reminiscent of the changing season, the soft colour palette transcends into earthy tones and features accents of platinum, ruby and shimmering metallics.

Paying homage to classicism, romantic Grecian silhouettes in dégradé silk tulle, lustrous crepe and Italian silk lurex and are adorned with intricate beadwork, delicate draping and elegant braided rope details.

“Two of the standout pieces include a draped dress with an embroidered panel on the skirt that tells part of the story. It was one of the initial pieces in the collection and helped spark ideas for other garments. It features draping, pleating, rope detail and plaiting,” continues Vasileff.

“The second, unsurprisingly, is the finale bridal look. It’s a big gown with a big split in it – it’s very sexy but I think a lot of brides will be able to reimagine it as a modern wedding gown.”

The fourteen-piece collection premiered as part of the Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Digital Runway Three. A first for Paolo Sebastian, this was filmed amidst the enchanting Redwood Forest, the natural environment painting the perfect backdrop for Persephone.

“We were excited to partner with MFF on this Australian first. With Couture shows in Paris pivoting and paving the way with a new digital presence, we were able to follow suit and showcase to a global audience” said Vasileff

Symbolising the perfect unison between classical storytelling and couture technique, Persephone is a testament to the brand’s artisanal abilities and is a labour of love in the truest sense.
