Penfolds is celebrating one of the most significant milestones in its history, marking 75 years of its flagship Grange with the release of a landmark anniversary vintage.
The 2022 Grange leads the 2026 Penfolds Collection, which launches globally today, August 6, and features wines sourced from Australia, the United States, France and China.
First created as an experimental wine by Penfolds’ inaugural chief winemaker Max Schubert in 1951, Grange has grown to become one of Australia’s most celebrated and collectable wines.
Its unconventional multi-regional blending philosophy initially challenged the expectations of Australian winemaking but would go on to shape the wine’s distinctive style and international reputation.
Today, Grange has maintained an unbroken line of vintages and remains a benchmark for Penfolds’ approach to quality, craftsmanship and blending.
Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago said the quality of the 2022 vintage made it particularly fitting for the milestone release.
“The 2022 Grange assuredly authenticates its flagship role and 75th Anniversary credentials. No pressure,” Peter said.
“Both timely and lucky – to avail such a stellar vintage in such a symbolic year.”
While Grange is the centrepiece of the new collection, the release also includes several of Penfolds’ best-known Australian wines.
The 2024 vintages of Bin 707 and Bin 407 showcase the winery’s multi-regional approach to Cabernet Sauvignon, while Yattarna and Bin 311 represent its work with cool-climate Chardonnay.
Penfolds White Winemaker Kym Schroeter described the 2024 Yattarna as a wine defined by “purity and composure”.
“A quietly assured release promising remarkable endurance,” Kym said.
Penfolds’ international winemaking program also continues through the collection, with new releases produced across France, China and California.
The French and Chinese offerings include FWT 585 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Petit Verdot and CWT 521, while four wines from the 2023 vintage represent Penfolds’ almost three-decade pursuit of winemaking in California.
These include Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz and the single-vineyard Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
“No longer a novelty, no fancy wordsmithing – all of these wines are unmistakably Penfolds, sourced from different hemispheres,” Peter said.
Rather than being defined by a single region, the wines are connected through the recognisable Penfolds House Style, allowing the winemaking team to interpret different regions, varieties and vintages through a consistent approach.
The 2026 Penfolds Collection, including the 75th anniversary release of the 2022 Grange, is available globally from Thursday, August 6.
