In 2015 you may remember a poster appearing across the streets of Adelaide, and later, the rest of Australia. It read, ‘Real Australians Say Welcome.’

Well, now you can purchase one for yourself.

Adelaide artist, Peter Drew, was at the helm of this national art installation that aimed to encourage people to rethink their views on asylum seekers and immigration in Australia.

The ambitious task saw Peter adorn the streets of Australia with 1000 of his posters.

The poster was initially inspired by the second verse of the National Anthem that calls upon our ‘courage to combine.’

Peter’s work suggested that ‘courage’ seemed absent from Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers.

Every poster is screen printed by hand onto 80gsm kraft paper and signed.

Peter’s other art is also for sale, including his ‘Aussie’ poster series featuring the folk hero Monga Khan.

You can even pick up one of the simplistically beautiful ‘Together Soon Enough’ posters.

Peter, who was born in Adelaide in 1983, has a masters degreee from the Glasgow School of Art.

His works have been exhibited across the country in major arts institutes.

As his ‘Real Australians Say Welcome’ piece was, most of the Peter’s work is installed on city streets.

“I like to exhibit my art on the street because public space is a great equaliser, and an ancient forum,” says Peter.

“When you address the public through the street you’re entering into a tradition that emphasises our fundamental freedom of expression, over the value of property.

“I enjoy examining our collective identities and my aim is always to emphasise the connections that bind us, rather than the fractures that divide us.”
