There are definitely a few people that will be making Father Christmas’ naughty list this year!

The RAA has warned that the festive season is a time to pay extra attention to personal, car and home security with insurance statistics showing criminals target holidaymakers and Christmas shoppers.

RAA’s Insurance Claims Manager Hayley Cain says the average number of burglary claims climbs by approximately 15 per cent from November through to January.

“We are already seeing an increase in claims as we head into Christmas and I urge homeowners to make sure their newly purchased mobile devices, electrical goods, jewellery and other valuables don’t end up under a burglar’s Christmas tree this year,” she said.

Ms Cain said there are a number of ways that you can keep your presents safe over the festive season including not carrying too many separate parcels when shopping and never leaving parcels visible in the car.

Present packaging can also attract the attention off criminals and Ms Cain says it only takes a minute to deal with it sensibly or hide it away from sight.

“Think about the signals you are sending if you leave expensive Christmas present packaging lying around or out for rubbish collection and then load the family into a taxi loaded with luggage for a big trip,” she said.

The RAA suggests adding gifts of considerable value, like jewellery or artwork, to your insurance cover.
