SA shearer takes on 24-hour challenge to fight bullying

South Australian shearer Mark Steinborner is taking on a mammoth 24-hour shearing marathon at the Eudunda Show this weekend, raising funds and awareness for anti-bullying charity Dolly’s Dream.

A South Australian shearer is preparing to take on an extraordinary 24-hour challenge this weekend, shearing sheep through the night to raise funds and awareness for Dolly’s Dream, a charity dedicated to protecting young Australians from bullying.

Local shearer Mark Steinborner will begin his mammoth effort at 2pm on Saturday 7 November, continuing through until 2pm on Sunday 8 November as part of the annual Eudunda Show.

Organised by Nutrien Ag Solutions Gawler/Kapunda, the fundraiser, aptly named Shear for Dolly, will bring the local agricultural community together in support of a cause that has touched families across Australia.

The challenge will take place at Eudunda Oval, with showgoers invited to watch Mark in action during the show’s public opening hours on Sunday 8 November, from 9:30am until the challenge concludes at 2pm.

The fundraiser is especially fitting for this year’s Eudunda Show, which is celebrating its 128th year with the slogan “On the Sheep’s Back, Giving Bullying the Sack!

Dolly’s Dream was established by Kate and Tick Everett in memory of their 14-year-old daughter, Amy ‘Dolly’ Everett, who died by suicide in 2018 following bullying and cyberbullying.

Since then, her parents have worked to turn their family’s devastating loss into a national movement, raising awareness about bullying and helping ensure other young people and families have access to support.

The foundation is particularly focused on reaching children and families in rural, regional and remote communities, where accessing mental health and bullying prevention services can be challenging.

Through its programs, Dolly’s Dream provides a dedicated Bullying Support Line, school education workshops, a Bullying Support Hub and digital safety resources to help families recognise, prevent and respond to bullying.

One of its best-known initiatives is Do It For Dolly Day, a national day of action held each May that encourages Australians to wear blue, Dolly’s favourite colour, and come together to spread kindness.

The campaign has grown into a major national fundraising initiative, with more than $1.9 million raised through Do It For Dolly Day in 2025 alone, helping the foundation continue its important work.

Now, Mark and the team at Nutrien Ag Solutions are doing their part to keep Dolly’s message alive, using a uniquely Australian challenge to draw attention to an issue affecting young people across the country.

Visitors attending the Eudunda Show on Sunday will have the opportunity to cheer Mark on during the final hours of his shearing marathon and show their support for the cause.
