Mexican Society has traded the hustle and bustle of Chinatown for a fresh new home on Hindmarsh Square, and it’s bringing a whole lot of flavour, music and good vibes to its new corner of Adelaide’s CBD.
But it’s not just the location that’s changed, with the restaurant also bringing back its original recipes and familiar flavours that made it a favourite in the first place.
And just three to four weeks after making the move, owner Shalin says the response has been a dream.
“The response is really good, and the most important thing is, we have a completely new audience now,” Shalin said.

Previously, the restaurant attracted plenty of diners heading into Chinatown, but its new location has opened the doors to a different crowd, particularly students and city workers.
And while the change of scenery is exciting, there’s something else Shalin is particularly passionate about.
After becoming involved in the business a couple of years ago, he noticed that some of the dishes had changed over time, and he was keen to rediscover the fundamental flavours of Mexican Society.

“I was still missing that taste.”
“So we changed the staff, got the actual supplies again, and got the same recipe which we used to have.”
The team also welcomed back experienced kitchen staff who were familiar with the original recipes, and according to Shalin, the difference has been noticeable.
“People who are regular customers, they keep saying that the food was great also back then, but now, it tastes amazing.”
And Shalin said the secret isn’t necessarily about using different ingredients, but knowing exactly what to do with them.
“Like for how long, at what temperature, that matters the most.”

And there are plenty of dishes giving diners a reason to keep coming back.
The restaurant’s wings have become a popular choice for those looking to kick off their meal with something delicious, while tacos remain another favourite. For those arriving with a bigger appetite, the lamb shoulder has been having a moment of its own, becoming particularly popular over the past three and a half months.
But Mexican Society isn’t just about what’s coming out of the kitchen.
“Working in this industry for so long, what I have realised is that the most important thing, other than food, in hospitality business is service.”
“They’re not coming out for food anymore. They’re coming out for the vibe.”
With lively music setting the mood, Mexican Society is designed to be somewhere you can bring your favourite people and enjoy a good time.
“Who doesn’t like to vibe?”
There’s a private dining area for smaller celebrations and gatherings, while another section features tables for groups of four, five or six, which can be pushed together to accommodate bigger catch-ups.

And with so many students now discovering the restaurant, Shalin says the space has also become somewhere friends can hang out, take a few insta few and enjoy themselves.
So next time you’re looking for somewhere to gather your friends, tuck into some Mexican favourites and enjoy a little atmosphere, Mexican Society is ready to welcome you as they take on their next chapter.
