South Australians have a new excuse to dine out this summer, with a brand-new initiative designed to help coastal hospitality businesses impacted by the algal bloom. The $15 million Coast is Calling – Dining Cashback program will see 300,000 locals score up to $50 back on meals at participating coastal cafes, pubs, restaurants, clubs, and takeaway venues across the state.
The program is funded by the State and Federal governments as part of the Algal Bloom Summer Plan, and is hoping to support small businesses doing it tough in seaside towns by encouraging more people to eat out, explore, and enjoy South Australia’s spectacular coastline.
Premier Peter Malinauskas shared, “Summer is the perfect time to enjoy a meal on our spectacular coast and the Coast is Calling Dining Cashback will make that even more affordable for South Australians.
“Coupled with the Coast is Calling Travel Vouchers, it’s the perfect excuse to holiday along our incredible coast or have a meal at our coastal pubs, restaurants, clubs, and even fish and chip shops.”
The cashback program will roll out across several months, beginning with a public ballot opening on Monday, November 3rd. The first draw, held on Monday, November 10th, will see 60,000 winners selected to receive a unique code that gives them 50 per cent cashback on a meal, up to $50. An additional four draws will take place each month through to March, with South Australians able to register once and remain in the running for the rest of the rounds unless they choose to opt out.
Federal Minister for Tourism Don Farrell shared, “I know firsthand just how hard our hospitality businesses work, often managing uncertainty, cancellations, and costs – even in peak periods.
“This is one example of how the Federal and State Governments together are delivering for those businesses and the thousands of workers that they employ.”
Environment and Water Minister Murray Watt added, “This program means more people enjoying their local pub or fish and chip shop, and more dollars flowing into coastal towns that rely on a strong summer season.
“It’s another practical example of how governments working together can deliver real support for communities feeling the impact of the algal bloom — and keep local economies thriving.”
The State Government also confirmed that the popular Coast is Calling Travel Vouchers will return this summer, bringing an additional 30,000 vouchers for coastal accommodation and experiences. Together with the dining cashback and marketing campaign extension, the combined investment exceeds $20 million.
