Australia’s silo art scene has been exploding in recent years, with dozens of towns across the country now featuring incredible, larger than life, artworks.

South Australia’s silo art trail has also been growing, so road trips across regional SA are more than just spotting giant Lobsters, pelicans and olives. It’s now all about breathtaking art that protrudes hundreds of metres above SA’s arid landcapes.

One remarkable addition to the silo art trail, is located in the Flinders Rangers town of Quorn. They have leveled up the traditional painted silos, adding a curated light show which is projected onto their Silo at night.

The stand out piece of art has gained national attention, with this week’s announcement that the Quorn Silo has been named as a finalist in the Australian Street Art Awards for Best External Mural.

Awards Director, Liz Rivers, said “The Awards showcase towns like Quorn that are using outdoor art to transform their infrastructure and street scapes, while educating Australians about the magnificent array of publicly-accessible art that can be found in every corner of the country.”

The award has been thoroughly judged by tourism operators from around Australia and abroad, with no stone left unturned, so for the Quorn silo light show to be a finalist is a huge achievement.

“Securing a finalist berth in the prestigious Awards further cements the Flinders Ranges and SA outback’s reputation as a bucket list destination for tourists who love to seek out art experiences,” Ms Rivers said.

The way the award has been judged is by looking at how it’s been used to attract visitors to the town, and how it’s brought the local community together.

The innovative show brings local stories to life each evening using the dual-tower Quorn silos as an expansive canvas, giving visitors access to a free educational experience that is both visually beautiful and respectful of the local heritage.

People can also submit photos that will be projected on to the silos.

The judges said, “We love that there are so many innovative and exciting elements that combine to create this unique Quorn experience – it’s not just the free nightly dynamic moving-image show, but we also impressed by the well-defined and designed viewing area, takeaway options that support the town’s two hotels, the artistic countdown, the post-show rolling exhibitions featuring local art and photography, and broadcasting each show’s audio through the local radio station so visitors can stay warm in their vehicles on nippy nights. What a fantastic art tourism experience.”

The Light show has been made by the project’s digital storytellers Illuminart, in conjunction with silo owners Viterra, and partners, the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society.

It’s already a fabulous achievement to be nominated but fingers crossed they can go one step further and take home the top gong.

The award winners will be announced on the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday the 2nd of March.

If you want to see the Quorn Silo Light Show it is on every night with times subject to change depending on light but in February usally start at 8:30pm.

The show can be found at Railway Terrace, Quorn SA 5433.
