Stained Glass Window Adds Beauty And Light To Westminster

One of South Australia’s largest stained glass windows has been installed at Westminster School.

Contemporary images of a dove and baptismal waters rising and embracing the holy cross now adorn the Sir Shirley Jeffries Memorial Chapel at Westminster School.

Comprising 64 individual leadlight panels and 1500 pieces of glass, the new stained glass window stands at nine metres tall.  The cost of the new window was fully funded through donations from the Westminster School community and was undertaken in readiness for the School’s 50-year Jubilee celebrations in 2011.

The creation and installation of the window took four months and has replaced a wall of amber glass at the eastern end of the School’s Chapel.

“Westminster’s new stained glass window is an inspirational feature of our School’s beautiful Chapel precinct,” said Westminster School Principal, Mr Steve Bousfield.  “The abundance of light that now floods the Chapel is magnificent”.

Established in 1967, the Sir Shirley Jeffries Memorial Chapel is the spiritual and wellbeing centre of our School.  “It is used by students for a range of communal faith, drama and music activities. On weekends, it is often used for community weddings and events.”

Mr Bousfield said the Chapel window refurbishment had been several years in the making.  “The realisation of our new stained glass window wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Westminster School’s community,” he said.  “We appreciate and thank them for their generosity.”

In December, Westminster School will celebrate the spirit of the festive season when it holds its fifth annual Christmas Lights display.  The display will draw attention to the new stained glass window in the School’s Chapel precinct.  The Chapel will also come alive with festive music and carols, courtesy of musicians from within the School community.

Westminster Christmas Lights will be turned on at dusk every evening until around 10.30pm from Thursday 16 December to Thursday 23 December and is a free community event.
