For Grant Burge and his family, welcoming people into their home wasn’t something reserved for special occasions, it was simply a way of life.
He puts it best. “Back when I was a boy, Sunday’s were for family and friends, and joining together for a big Sunday lunch,” said Grant. “I can still picture myself looking out the kitchen window to see the vintage car club roll into the driveway, or Mum’s tennis friends, social clubs, or other people we loved. A lot of people would come to our home on a Sunday, for a barbecue lunch, drinks, a hit of tennis and a good time.”
The story begins in 1908, when Percival Norman Burge, the third generation of the Burge family, purchased the property. A small tin cottage came first before construction of the grand stone home began in 1916. Delayed by World War I, the foundations were left to cure until building resumed in 1919, which Grant believes helped the home remain remarkably intact more than a century later.
With its 14-inch-thick stone walls and craftsmanship that have stood the test of time, Wilsford House has watched generations of the Burge family grow up within its walls.
It was home to Grant Burge’s grandfather, later became the family home where Grant himself grew up, and today forms an important link between the family’s past and present, with sixth-generation winemakers Amelia and Trent Burge continuing the family’s legacy through Corryton Burge.
Rather than letting the property become another piece of Barossa history, Grant and Helen Burge made the decision to restore it and share it with visitors.
Having lived in the home for decades and created countless memories there, they wanted others to experience the warmth, generosity and slower pace of life that has always defined both Wilsford House and the Barossa itself.

The Colin & Ethel Nancy Suite celebrates fourth-generation winemaker Colin Burge and his wife Nancy, who made Wilsford House their home after World War II. Colin expanded the family’s winery, while Nancy, a trained nurse, founded the Lyndoch Tennis Club on the property’s backyard court and played a role in the early Barossa Vintage Festival. The Percival Norman Suite is of course named after the third-generation Burge.
Throughout the home you’ll find original timber floorboards, antique pieces and artwork treasured by the Burge family sitting alongside modern comforts.
