STIHL TIMBERSPORTS first ever SA AXE-ion championship is heading to Glenelg

Razor sharp axes and high-powered STIHL chainsaws will be on show at the upcoming STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® in Adelaide.

Calling all AXE-ion aficionados! Australia’s top STIHL TIMBERSPORTS athletes will yield razor sharp axes and high-powered chainsaws at the Australian Trophy & Australian Women’s Championship, kicking off for the first time in SA this March.

Set to take the stage this March 5, current Women’s champion Renne Retschlag will look to defend her title and take the podium at the Jimmy Melrose Park in Glenelg South.

Proudly supported by the City of Holdfast Bay, the free, family-friendly event will also feature food trucks, a bar and live music, making it the perfect way to spend your Saturday.

Going head to head with the reigning champion will be Queenslander Jodie Beutel and Katrina Head and Tasmania’s Kris Brown, as well as two further athletes qualifying the day before (March 4) the competition. Each competitor is vying to take the top spot across three events: Underhand Chop, STIHL Stock Saw and the Single Buck disciplines.

“I’m really excited to be back in 2022 hoping to replicate my results last year,” Retschlag says.

“It’s excellent to see the ladies coming back again and continue to show the world that Timbersports isn’t just a male sport. My two daughters want to compete one day so it’s a great thing to be paving the way for the younger generation.”

Event Director Renee Kitto is excited to see the nation’s top women sharing the spotlight with their male counterparts in South Australia this year.

“We’re proud to present the Australian Women’s Championship to a new crowd in South Australia. It’s such an excellent opportunity to showcase the true athleticism of our female athletes and share the stage with our male counterparts,” Kitto says.

“We have an excellent array of new and returning talents from both the Australian Trophy and the Women’s championship, and I’m sure it will be an extremely close cut event.”

The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Trophy format is the sport’s most physically demanding competition with athletes going head-to-head in a series of knockout match-ups. In each match-up, athletes will have to complete four demanding disciplines back-to-back: Stock Saw, Underhand Chop, Single Buck and Standing Block Chop.

The fastest athlete from each match-up will progress to the next round, culminating in a grand final between the last two remaining competitors.

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS athlete Mitch Argent is back this year to continue his winning streak from 2021 after taking the top spot in the finals round from Brayden Meyer. Argent is up against other men at the top of their sport with all of the 14 athletes being the highest-ranking male athletes from around the country with wood chopping sports carrying through generations.

“I love competing and last year was a great result, so I’m looking forward to putting my training into practice and hopefully replicating that this year,” Argent says.
