Tasting Australia 2024: A culinary odyssey culminating in the exclusive black tie Waite 100 Gala

Celebrity chef Matt Moran will head up this historic event, which marks the centenary of the Waite Gift, and celebrates culinary and viticultural excellence.

In 2024, Australia’s most esteemed culinary festival, Tasting Australia, returns with a flourish, promising an epicurean journey like no other. Scheduled from 3rd to 12th May, this festival, presented by RAA Travel, is set to unfold over 10 days, featuring a staggering array of over 150 events across South Australia. This year, the festival is not just about tantalizing the taste buds but also about creating unforgettable experiences.

The festival’s lineup is diverse and exciting. It includes a revamped Town Square, unique Tasting Australia Airlines excursions to the Eyre Peninsula and the Limestone Coast, and a drinks program brimming with rare and exclusive tastings. However, the crown jewel of this year’s festival is the inaugural Tasting Australia Waite 100 Gala, a black-tie event that promises to be an unparalleled celebration of culinary and viticultural excellence.

The Waite 100 Gala is more than just a dinner; it’s a historic event marking the centenary of the Waite Gift. Set against the backdrop of the Waite Campus, a hub of agricultural and wine research, this event will take place on the lawns adjacent to the historic Urrbrae House, under the magical glow of a sailcloth tent. The setting is not just picturesque but steeped in history, as the Waite family resided here from 1877 until 1922.

Celebrity chef Matt Moran, renowned for his culinary artistry, will be at the helm of the evening’s menu. The gala will feature an array of roving and stationary canapés, each meticulously paired with wines. These culinary creations are not just a feast for the palate but a narrative of the Waite legacy, celebrating the monumental contributions of the Waite family to the fields of agriculture and wine.

The evening begins with an exclusive wine tasting session, showcasing a selection from emerging, mid-career, and legacy winemakers. This is followed by a gastronomic journey through Moran’s curated menu, complemented by food producer stations and matched wines.

Adding to the grandeur of the evening is Master of Wine Andrew Caillard, a graduate from Roseworthy and founder of Langton’s, Australia’s leading wine auction house. Caillard will not only emcee the event but also lead an exhilarating live auction. The auction items are nothing short of extraordinary, ranging from a limited-edition leather-bound issue of The Australian Ark by Caillard to a commemorative bottle of Waite 100 whisky, and even tickets to Tasting Australia Airlines: Limestone Coast.

The gala also features a silent auction, with a selection of rare and large-format premium wines. The proceeds from these auctions will support the Peter Waite Centenary Scholarship for Excellence in Agriculture, aiming to broaden access to agricultural education.

Tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime event are priced at $242, inclusive of an all-encompassing canapé service by Matt Moran and a selection of fine wines, whisky, gin, sparkling, and beer, along with premium wine tastings.

The Tasting Australia Waite 100 Gala is not just an event; it’s a celebration of history, a tribute to agricultural and viticultural achievements, and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Waite family. It’s an evening that promises to be etched in the memories of its attendees for years to come.
