Calling scientists of all ages and fans of the strange and unusual creepy crawlies that live in our world. Windmill Theatre Company’s brilliant new production Moss Piglet is the perfect combination of theatre and science that will keep audiences of any age enthralled in this exploration into the world of the ‘Moss Piglet’, or Tardigrade.
Whilst this microscopic creature may seem like an unusual pick as the centrepiece of Windmill’s latest production, it is a fascinating creature that lends itself perfectly to have this educational piece of theatre written about it.
This forty minute production moves at a lively pace that doesn’t allow for any attention spans to get lost. We meet two scientists, played by Gareth Davies and Dylan Miller, who are tasked with conducting a series of experiments on a tardigrade and to report on their findings. There are facts learnt, laughter shared and the joy of theatre experienced by the entire audience.
The magic in this show is the limited dialogue. Our two scientists use few words and the whole performance is narrated by a voice over. It reminded me of one of those ABC Kids shows that you as a parent can’t help but watch because it’s that engaging. The show is aided by a creative use of AV, cartoon, puppetry and some adorable, larger than life ‘Moss Piglets’.
My 9-year-old daughter who attended the world premiere with me said, “This show is just incredible. I laughed and I learnt something…and the puppets are so adorable!”
Make sure you arrive 30 mins prior to the session time as there are several ‘hands on’ stations set up in the Space Theatre foyer with microscopes that kids young and old can spend time exploring. A brilliant way to focus your attention into what the show involves.
Windmill Theatre is onto a real winner with Moss Piglet. It is playing at the Space Theatre until Sunday 20 October and if you have an inquisitive child at a loose end, this is the show for you.
