These Bauhaus-Inspired Frames Have Been Reimagined For 2017

Peter Coombs’ newest capsule collection collaboration with Julia Gogosha was recently shown in New York, and will be available for a limited few in Adelaide.

There are many struggles in a glasses-wearer’s life: sipping a cup of tea and having your glasses fog up; having to wear 3D cinema glasses on top of your own; and the most important: trying to find the perfect frames to fit your face and style. You want something that suits your face, but also has a bit of uniqueness about it, considering they’re front and centre at all times. One man who understands this struggle is Peter Coombs of Peter Coombs Design, who describes his eclectic eyewear as ‘jewellery for the face’.

With his eyewear giving a lively expression and a subtle confidence to those who choose to enhance their own personality with Peter Coombs’ unique flavour, they’re perfect for those who want to be the most original one in the room. The sterling silver and distinctive swing hinges of the capsules are defining features of Coombs’ bespoke, one-off and limited edition pieces. With many celebrities amongst his fans, you’re in good company.

His newest collection, The Tiers Project, in collaboration with Julia Gogosha, worldrenowned Los Angeles-based ambassador, purveyor and barometer of unique, handmade, independent eyewear, is described as a meeting of minds and influenced by time and dimensions; a capsule collection that celebrates bold ideas and brave personalities. This limited edition set of four hand-crafted metal eyewear art pieces, was launched in New York in April, and will be available for delivery in September.

While these frames are mostly available in super high-end boutiques in North America (think Sunset Boulevard and Madison Avenue) a limited amount will be available from their studio here in Adelaide. Retail for AUD$2650 per pair or AUD$10,000 for the set of 4, if you want a pair you’ll have to act fast.

Peter has reimagined his very first eyewear design from 1986, Electro Torch. This frame has an ’80s zeitgeist reflecting a ‘Jules-Verne-under-the-sea-post-Apocalypse’ feel. The ‘clunky but funky’ Electro Torch design has stood the test of time, is still requested and still intrigued Coombs. In 2016, and a mechanical reimagining of the design had evolved in his brain which led him ask Julia Gogosha to collaborate on the collection, to refine the style and shape a special offer for eyewear connoisseurs and collectors – The Tiers Project.

With over 30 years of experience, Coombs has developed extraordinary eyewear frames by exploring alternative, innovative ways to form and colour a variety of precious and refractive metals. With inspirations coming from the everyday, and rare pieces being made from his Adelaide studio, he aims to deliver longevity, comfort and functionality for the wearer. Let’s be real glasses-wearers, that’s all we’ve ever wanted.
