Three SA areas break September temperature records

Sunday was a hot one for South Australia, with three places beating their record high temperatures.

Sunday proved to be a scorcher, with three South Australian areas beating their high temperature records.

The South Australian Weather Facebook page says it had “been a bit warm out west,” with “new September records set at a number of towns.”

Ceduna, located on the shores of Murat Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula, was the hottest of them all. Ceduna hit a temperature of 39.8°C. This beat their previous record of 39.7°C recorded on 29th September, 1980; station opened 1939.

The vast and wild Nullarbor came in at a close second with 38.9°C, surpassing the previous temperature of 38.6°C recorded on September 10th, 2020; station opened 1988.

And the small outback town of Wudinna was just behind at 37.5°C, higher than the previous record of 36.8°C recorded in September 27th, 2008; station opened 1999.

There’s more hot weather on the horizon, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasting hot and dry conditions continuing this week across much of Southern Australia as a large, slow-moving high-pressure system lingers over the continent.

Daytime maximum and overnight minimum temperatures are expected to peak at 8°C to 16°C above average, starting Sunday until Tuesday, across much of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales; including Sydney.

The BOM says the prolonged, early-season nature of this heat is very uncommon for September, and a number of early season and September records are likely to be broken in coming days.

A reprieve from the heat is not expected until Wednesday onwards, as a stronger cold front crosses the South Eastern states.

For Adelaide, the start of the week will be warm with temperatures dropping mid-week, before temperatures start to climb again on Friday. The BOM has forecasted temperatures as follows for the week:

  • Monday – 24°C, partly cloudy.
  • Tuesday – 21°C, cloud clearing.
  • Wednesday – 18°C, a shower or two.
  • Thursday – 17°C, cloudy.
  • Friday – 20°C, sunny.
  • Saturday – 23°C, sunny.
  • Sunday – 26°C, sunny.

The BOM advises that during periods of heightened heat, it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings. Stay informed via the BOM website or or the BOM Weather app.
