Uni students to perform free 6-hour concert for fifth annual ‘Guitarathon’

Classical guitar students from the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music are presenting a diverse and refined program titled Guitarathon.

Classical guitar students from the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music are presenting a diverse and refined program of solo and chamber music as part of the yearly showcase titled Guitarathon.

Senior lecturer Dr Oliver Fartach-Naini has curated his undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as up-and-coming students from the Elder Conservatorium’s Open Music Academy to perform in the highly respected Elder Hall.

Now in its fifth year, Guitarathon is a free six-hour concert packed with gems of the classical guitar’s rich repertoire.

Dr Oliver Fartach-Naini said: “As the end of the university year approaches, this is a fun way for our students to showcase what they have been working on.”

“This is a great way for people to get a taste of what classical guitar has to offer, without having to commit to a timeframe or even paying for a ticket. This is a celebration of the University of Adelaide’s thriving classical guitar community.”

The stylistically diverse program includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Mauro Giuliani, Francisco Tarrega, Carlo Domeniconi, Enrique Granados, Paulo Bellinati, just to name a few composers performed by the Elder Conservatorium Guitar Ensemble featuring over 10 talented musicians.

The six-hour event is also being catered by the delicious Daisy Burger and a bar proudly sponsored by Kay Brothers Winery.

For classical music devotees and fans of seriously respectable guitar playing this is a sophisticated show and chance to view a highly polished level of musicianship free of charge. It truly transports you to a time in music which is not only traditional but tranquil watching the players pour heart and soul into the pieces.

Guitarathon is on Sunday 6 of November at Elder Hall, the University of Adelaide, North Terrace.

Free with no registration required. Performances commence at 4PM going until 10PM.
