Veolia World Solar Challenge to hit Victoria Square Today

Head into Victoria Square today for the spectacular Veolia World Solar Challenge finish.

The Veolia World Solar Challenge will make its way to the finish line in Victoria Square some thime this afternoon after a gruelling 3,000km journey across the country.

The race started on Sunday with 37 teams from 20 different nations setting off from Darwin in solar powered vehicles.

Currently the top three teams Tokai University, Nuon Solar and University of Michigan are battling it out for first place.

“It’s set to be an exciting finish so I urge everyone to head to Victoria Square tomorrow to welcome the teams as they make their way across the finish line,” Acting Lord Mayor David Plumridge said.

The Square will also feature the Adelaide GreenZone Drive allowing the public to experience a current model ‘eco’ car, ranging from the Nissan LEAF to a diesel-powered BMW X1 sDrive. To book a test drive, visit www.greenzonedrive.com.au

All of the teams who participated in the Veolia World Solar Challenge will be on show as well as the Lord Mayoral electric car, a Mitsubishi i-Miev, which is recharged by solar energy.

A Science Outside the Square exhibition will be on display and a 100-mile-food-philosophy cafe and live entertainment will help welcome competitors and visitors to the city.

Adelaide City Council has contributed $35,000 to the entire event, which helps promote sustainable energy management through the use of solar power and electric vehicles.

“Council is proud to be a sponsor of the World Solar Challenge and shares its commitment to sustainable energy,” David said.

Council has installed nearly 300 solar panels on the roof of the Adelaide Central Market, reducing its carbon emissions by about 70 tonnes per year. The Central Market Upark is also home to the world’s fuel cell powered charging station and compliments the two electric car charging bays at Grote Street Upark and two electric bike charging bays at Light Square Upark.
