Adelaide is heading into a cool, changeable stretch of weather, with showers and brisk winds to start the period before drier, sunnier conditions settle in early next week. For locals, that means a distinctly wintry Thursday and Friday, a fairly grey but manageable weekend, and then a lift in both sunshine and temperatures across Adelaide by Monday and Tuesday before showers return again midweek.
Today looks set to be the wettest and windiest day of the seven-day outlook for Adelaide. Partly cloudy skies will sit over the city, but showers are very likely through the day, with tops around 15 degrees and southwesterly winds blowing at 25 to 35 km/h. It will feel cold across the suburbs, especially around exposed coastal spots like Glenelg and through the Hills where Mount Barker is only forecast to reach 13 degrees.
Friday stays on the cool side, though the worst of the wind should ease. A shower or two is possible, with a top of 17 degrees after a low of 10, and winds shifting from southerly to westerly before becoming light later in the day.
Saturday keeps that unsettled feel hanging around, although rainfall totals are expected to stay low. Adelaide is forecast to be partly cloudy with a medium chance of showers through the morning and afternoon, but light winds should make it a little more comfortable outdoors. Another 17-degree top is expected.
By Sunday, the city starts to turn a corner. There is the chance of morning fog, but the day should open into mostly sunny conditions with light winds becoming northerly and a slightly milder top of 18 degrees.
That brighter trend continues into the start of next week. Monday is shaping up as one of the better days of the run, with mostly sunny skies, north to northeasterly winds and a top of 19 degrees.
Tuesday looks similar at first, with a mostly sunny morning before cloud builds later in the day and the slight chance of a shower. Temperatures climb to 20 degrees, making it the mildest day of the stretch.
By Wednesday, the next change arrives, bringing a high chance of showers and fresh northerly winds turning northwesterly. Adelaide is forecast to reach 19 degrees, but it will likely feel cooler once the rain sets in.
Across regional South Australia, the broader pattern is still being driven by low pressure to the south and a high moving in from the west. For the rest of Thursday, showers are expected about the West Coast and agricultural area, possibly extending into the south of the Pastoral districts, with the heaviest falls most likely along windward coasts and ranges. Friday keeps showers near the west coast and agricultural districts, while isolated fog patches are possible in the west.
Conditions begin to ease on Saturday, with light showers contracting to southern coasts later in the day, before Sunday brings only light coastal showers, some fog about central and eastern districts, and generally calmer conditions. Rainfall totals through to the end of Sunday are expected to stay below 5mm in the south of the Pastoral districts, rising to 2 to 10mm across the agricultural area and Flinders district, and 10 to 25mm about central and southern windward coasts and ranges.
For inland river communities, flood impacts remain a serious concern, with elevated levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka for several weeks. Many roads and access tracks are impacted by flooding, particularly at river and creek crossings, so travellers are being urged to check conditions before heading out.
