South Aussies invited to turn their real-life stories into new operas in major State Opera project

State Opera South Australia is calling on locals to share personal stories for a new creative project that will transform selected submissions into original micro-operas, with entries now extended until 19 June.

South Australians are being invited to share their stories in one of the most unique ways yet, as State Opera South Australia extends submissions for its ambitious new creative initiative, Our Opera, Our Story.

Now open until June 19th, the statewide project is asking people from all walks of life to submit real stories that capture the essence of living in South Australia, from extraordinary life-changing moments to small but meaningful everyday memories.

Four selected stories will ultimately be transformed into brand-new micro-operas, created by leading Australian composers and librettists, and brought to the stage as part of State Opera’s 2027 season.

Importantly, no opera experience is required to take part. Organisers say the project is about authentic storytelling, not performance background, with an open invitation for anyone to contribute.

So how do you submit? Submissions can be made in written, audio or video format and then submitted online, making it accessible for participants to share their story in whatever way feels most natural.

Once entries close on June 19th, shortlisted stories will go to a public vote from June 24th to July 1st, before a final selection panel chooses the four works to be developed into micro-operas.

Whether it’s a story of family history, a moment of community pride, a migration journey, a local legend or a memory tied to food, sport or place, Our Opera, Our Story is looking for narratives that feel distinctly South Australian.

Selected storytellers will be closely involved in the creative journey, with their experiences reimagined into original operatic works. Each chosen participant will be credited as the original storyteller and invited behind the scenes throughout the development process.

Perks for selected stories include exclusive rehearsal access, a VIP opening night experience with four tickets, and the opportunity to meet the performers bringing their story to life on stage. Most significantly, their story will become part of South Australia’s ongoing cultural legacy.

Submissions are now open, and South Australians have until June 19th to share a story that could soon become part of the operatic stage.
