This week, Adelaide will see a mild start, a wet midweek break, and more showers lining up again by the weekend and early next week. For locals, that means a fairly pleasant Tuesday before the city turns cooler on Wednesday, then a return to gusty winds and on-and-off rain as another front approaches.
Today is shaping up as the pick of the next few days, with a mostly sunny day across Adelaide and a top of 20 degrees. Northeasterly winds will turn northerly and strengthen through the morning, and while the day should stay dry for most suburbs, there is a medium chance of a late shower or two tonight. Wednesday brings the week’s first more noticeable change, with showers likely, especially through the morning, and a cooler top of 17 degrees. It will also be breezy early, with north to northwesterly winds shifting westerly before easing later in the day.
By Thursday, Adelaide should settle again, with partly cloudy skies, light winds for much of the day, and only a slight chance of a shower. Temperatures will lift back to around 19 degrees, making it a calmer break between systems. Friday then warms up more noticeably, reaching 23 degrees, but that warmer air comes ahead of another front. Cloud will increase and there’s a medium chance of showers developing in the afternoon and evening, with northerly winds becoming fresh again.
The weekend looks mixed rather than washed out. Saturday is likely to be the wetter day, with showers expected, most likely during the morning, before conditions gradually ease. A top of 18 degrees is forecast, along with a wind shift from north to southwesterly during the day. Sunday keeps things cooler, with a partly cloudy outlook and just a slight chance of a light shower later in the day. By Monday, the unsettled pattern returns more firmly, with cloudy skies and a very high chance of showers across Adelaide. Rainfall totals could become more noticeable then, with between 4 and 20 mm possible and a top of 18 degrees.
Across broader South Australia, the week is being shaped by northerly winds ahead of a weakening cold front midweek, followed by a second front later in the week. On Tuesday, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop in the state’s west, with isolated showers extending into southern agricultural districts by evening. Wednesday sees those showers shift across central and eastern agricultural areas before clearing later, while western parts turn cooler behind the change. Thursday is mostly dry statewide apart from isolated showers west of about Ceduna, but Friday sees rain building again in the far west before spreading into agricultural areas and western districts during the evening.
Through to the end of Friday, rainfall is generally expected to stay below 5 mm across much of the agricultural area and west, increasing to 5 to 10 mm in southern and western coastal districts, with isolated falls of 10 to 20 mm possible there. Further north and inland, temperatures remain above average, tending well above average in the north by Friday.
Flood conditions are also continuing in the state’s inland river systems. River and creek levels remain elevated along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka, with high flows expected to continue for several weeks. Roads and access tracks are being impacted by flooding, especially at river and creek crossings, so anyone travelling in those remote areas should check conditions carefully before setting out.
Happy Tuesday!
